The Power Of The Penny

The Power Of The Penny

How many of you have found a penny?

Do you pick it up if it is tails up?

Are you a believer in the "lucky penny"?

A penny is a penny.  However, I will not pick one up (for keeping) unless it is heads up.   I will pick it up and turn it over for the next person.  Silly but true!  Why is it that so many people share that same behavior?  Beliefs are powerful.  We as a society share a lot of beliefs.

As a therapist, one very important part of the process is to assist the client in evaluating their beliefs.  Do you know why you do what you do?  Have you ever thought about it?  If you are suffering from some form of mood disorder there is a good chance that your beliefs contribute to this illness.  To examine your beliefs, go about your normal day and write down the belief that is attached to everything you do.  For example, do you make your bed, shower in the morining, lock your door, take your shoes off before entering your house, etc.  These are all decisions that you have made based on your belief system.  If you don't think it is important - try stopping these behaviors.  You will suffer anxiety.

It is possible to change your beliefs - especially if they are causing you distress.  This process can be extensive.  It would be best to undertake this with a trained specialist becasue it takes a lot of feedback, support and specific technique.
