FLIP THE COIN

FLIP THE COIN

So many times we get discouraged and overwhelmed.  Often, the reason for discontent is because we are stuck in our way of thinking.   I encourage clients to keep a coin in their pocket and when they feel stuck, flip the coin (even in their pocket).  When you make the concentrated effort to do this simple behavior, you have just paused and made the decision to change your behavior.  This is important becasue often just making the decision to change is enough to make the difference.

The DECISION to change is vital.  Long ago, I made the decision in psychotherapy to not work with court ordered clients because - someone else told them it was time to change.  If the client doesn't want it - it won't happen.   Sometimes, motivation is transferred from another person (my wife made me come to counseling).  The outcome for this client depends on the importance of the relationship with the person who transferred the belief.  Note to self...if you are not personally motivated, therapy is a waste of money.   If you truly want change...all things are possible.
