Have you ever been doing a puzzle and could not find the right piece? You walk away, come back and there it is right in front of you. You came into the room for something and can't remember what you needed? You walk back to where you were and "Aha, now I remember!"

The role of the therapist is to help you take yourself out of the problem. This can sometimes be difficult because most people dig in and get comfortable in their misery. One way to help a client is by asking the client to choose something from the room and then ask them to stand on a chair and look at it. They could also lay on the floor and look at it. The object will look different because their perspective is different. If you step away from a problem and go on with your life - you will gain a different perspective. All problems look different when time passes. It is when we over react or don't plan our reaction that things don't work out so well. One of the best techniques to deal with problems is to practice a PAUSE. Pausing is a behavior that allows you to gain perspective. Slow down, take a break, plan your reaction and then execute your plan to overcome the obstacle.
