Locus Of Control

Locus Of Control

What is locus of control?  Locus of control describes the degree to which you perceive that outcomes result from your own behaviors, or from forces that are external.  This produces a continuum with external control at one end and internal control at the other.

People who develop an internal locus of control believe that they are responsible for their own success/failures.  Those with an external locus of control believe that external forces, such as luck or society, determine their outcomes.  This leaves them feeling out of control and helpless.

In general, those with an internal locus of control are more likely to engage in activities that improve their situation, strive for achievement, work hard to develop skills, are inquisitive and industrious, and learn how to use their skills to create positive outcomes in the future.

However, there are some drawbacks to having a strong internal locus of control.   These people tend to be achievement minded and have a hard time considering others.  They can leave others feeling controlled or trampled.  The person who feels the need to contol the outcome will not usually work well with others.

While this information is useful in some situations - not all situations can be controlled.  Random things do happen and can't be controlled.  You, however, can control your behavior and attitude which in turn will impact the final outcome.

Ways to Improve Your Locus of Control

  • Pay attention to your self talk -- If you have a negative tone with yourself, you will have to use RESTRUCTURING to make some changes.

  • Set goals -- Your goals should be written down and measurable.  If you are not able to identify progress - it is not helpful and will not lead to increases in your confidence.

  • develop your problem solving and decision making skills -- Refer to PROBLEM SOLVING 101
